Doppler Services

Doppler is a specialized type of ultrasound which allows the radiologist to assess blood flow in the major vascular structures throughout the body. The radiologist can distinguish between arterial and venous flow with the help of colour imaging of the vessels shown in real-time. Analysis of the flow spectrum allows calculation of flow speed.  This makes it possible to assess the following:

  • Venous thrombosis (clots in veins)
  • Stenosis (narrowing) or blockage in arteries
  • The adequacy of bloodflow in the placenta in obstetric patients
  • Blood flow in abdominal organs, pelvis and other soft tissues can be examined to add information and improve diagnosis.

Preparation for a doppler ultrasound

No special preparation is necessary. It is a longer examination, therefore if not an emergency, booking an appointment is preferred.
