Abdominal Ultrasound

Abdominal Ultrasound

The real-time images provided by ultrasound of the abdomen are useful for:

  • Evaluation of the kidneys, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and blood vessels of the abdomen.
  • Determination of the source of abdominal pain such as stones in the gallbladder or kidney, or an inflamed appendix.
  • Guiding procedures such as a needle biopsy, where a needle is used to take small samples of tissue for pathological examination.

Preparation for an abdominal ultrasound:
This may involve fasting for up to 12 hours or may require you to drink water prior to the test to fill your bladder. Check with the receptionist to determine whether special preparation is necessary when booking your appointment. Come dressed in clothing easy to remove, as you will be asked to undress to your underwear and be given a gown to wear for the examination.
