Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE) is a gentle and minimally invasive procedure designed to alleviate the discomfort and challenges associated with uterine fibroids and adenomyosis. This treatment works by blocking blood flow to specific areas of the uterus, effectively shrinking fibroids and reducing excessive bleeding.
Why UAE?
Minimally Invasive: No incisions are needed, leading to a quicker recovery. Effective: Many patients see a significant reduction in symptoms within weeks-months. Preserves uterine health: Unlike some surgical options, UAE aims to preserve the uterus.
How Does the Procedure Work?
Step 1: Consultation and Imaging: Before the procedure, you will have a consultation with your doctor and imaging tests (like an MRI or ultrasound) to better understand your condition. Step 2: Procedure Day You will usually receive a mild sedative or anesthesia to help you relax. The artery in the left wrist is accessed and a thin catheter (a long, flexible tube) is guided to the uterine arteries. Step 3: Embolization: Once in position, tiny particles are injected through the catheter into the uterine arteries. These particles block blood flow to the fibroids causing them to shrink or stopping the excessive bleeding. Step 4: Recovery The procedure usually takes about 60 minutes. You will be admitted to hospital for overnight observation and pain medication.
What to Expect After the Procedure?
Most patients can return to normal activities within a week. Follow-up appointments may be necessary to monitor your recovery and check on the results of the embolization.
What are some of the risks? While UAE is generally safe, some risks include:
