Paediatric Imaging: Preparing for the Unexpected

February is a month dedicated to health and well-being—whether it’s prioritizing heart health, getting back into routine check-ups, or ensuring your child is prepared for the year ahead. With kids back in full swing at school, sports, and extracurricular activities, minor injuries and unexpected medical concerns are bound to happen. When they do, Morton & Partners Radiologists is here to provide expert, compassionate care to ensure your child’s health and safety.

Dr. Marc Jordaan, our Specialist Pediatric Radiologist, shares essential tips to help parents prepare their children for any imaging they may need this year.

Meet Dr. Marc Jordaan
Dr. Jordaan is an internationally trained Specialist Pediatric Radiologist with a wealth of expertise in child-focused imaging. After completing his medical training at the University of Pretoria, he pursued advanced radiology training across the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. His Pediatric Imaging Fellowship at Harvard’s Boston Children’s Hospital, along with his tenure as Assistant Professor at Columbia University in New York, has made him one of South Africa’s leading specialists in pediatric radiology and neuroradiology.

1. Be Prepared for the Unexpected
From sports injuries to lingering coughs requiring a chest X-ray, understanding the different types of medical imaging can help you and your child feel more at ease. X-rays are quick and painless, while more advanced scans like MRIs may require extra preparation. Knowing what to expect makes the process smoother for both you and your child.

2. Comfort and Reassure Your Child
Medical scans can feel intimidating to little ones, especially when they don’t know what to expect. Remind them that most scans—like X-rays and ultrasounds—are completely painless. At Morton & Partners, our team takes extra care to ensure children feel safe and comfortable throughout their visit.

3. Safety First: Minimizing Radiation Exposure
We know parents want the best for their child’s health, which is why we follow the ALARA principle—”as low as reasonably achievable”—when performing imaging that requires radiation, such as X-rays and CT scans. We also prioritize non-radiation imaging methods like ultrasound and MRI whenever possible, ensuring the safest approach to diagnosis.

4. Trust in Our Expertise
Our experienced team understands the unique needs of pediatric patients. Whether it’s a routine scan or a more complex imaging procedure, we provide expert care in a child-friendly environment, helping you navigate your child’s health with confidence.

A Healthy Start to 2025
February is the perfect time to refocus on health—whether it’s scheduling check-ups, ensuring kids stay active, or being prepared for life’s little accidents. While no parent wants to anticipate medical concerns, it’s comforting to know that Morton & Partners is here when you need us.
