CT Abdomen & Pelvis

Abdominal CT is a very important tool in managing abdominal and pelvic disorders. The improved spatial resolution of our newest multi-slice scanners makes it possible to demonstrate the anatomy of the abdomen in multiple planes without sacrificing image quality. CT of the abdomen imaged in the coronal plane will have the same orientation as a plain X-ray of the abdomen, which can be useful for clinicians.

The CT Abdomen is useful in diagnosing the cause of abdominal/pelvic pain and disease of the internal organs, small intestine and colon which can be caused by the following:

• Infections such as pyelonephritis or abscesses.
• Inflammatory conditions – appendicitis, diverticulitis, pancreatitis, Crohn’s disease.
• Renal (kidney) stones.
• Cancers of the stomach, colon, liver, kidneys, bladder, pancreas as well as lymphoma.
• Injuries to the internal organs.
• Abdominal aortic aneurysms (see CTA).
• Pre- and post-surgical assessment.
• Guidance for biopsy/drainage of pathological findings.

Special preparation for CT Abdomen & Pelvis:
This study needs special preparation and it is essential to book an appointment (except for renal stones and other emergencies). Clear instructions will be given by our reception staff.

You may have to drink a special fluid, which will fill the bowel and make it easier to recognize pathology around the colon and small intestines.
If you have had a barium examination recently please notify reception.
